Sending messages
Write, reply, address someone, use emoji and commands.
Writing
Click the message box, type, and press Enter. Shift+Enter starts a new line inside your message. On a phone the box behaves like your messages app: capitals at the start of a sentence, autocorrect and word suggestions. The round arrow sends.
Talking to someone in particular
Start with their nickname and a colon: Sam: are you there?. Press Tab after the first letters of a nickname to complete it. The person sees the line as a highlight.
Actions
/me waves shows as "Sam waves", in the third person.
Emoji
- Suggestions: as you type a word that has an emoji, such as "pizza", "coffee", "cat", "party" or "thanks", a few emoji appear above the box. Tap one to swap it for the word.
- The emoji picker: the smiley button opens a picker with eight groups (smileys, people, animals, food, activities, travel, objects, symbols) and a Recent tab with the emoji you used last. On a computer there is a search box: type "raccoon" or "pizza" and the emoji appears. It works the same in every browser, so Windows has as many emoji to choose from as a Mac or an iPhone.
- Names: type a name between colons, such as
,:thumbsup:or:raccoon:, and it becomes the emoji when you send; any emoji in the picker can be typed this way (,:red_apple:...). Names that are not known stay as you typed them. - Your keyboard: on a phone the keyboard's own emoji suggestions and the emoji key work as usual.
- The emoji panel (phones): the smiley button opens a panel where the keyboard would be. It stays open while you send, so a run of emoji messages is quick. ABC brings the keyboard back, the delete key removes the last emoji.
Commands
Anything that starts with / is a command rather than a message. To send a message that really starts with a slash, type two slashes: //etc is sent as /etc. All commands are listed in Commands: overview.
While you type /, the box suggests commands. Tab completes them.
Going back
Press Up in an empty box to bring back your earlier messages.
