Scheduled events
Plan a live event: everybody is told, the room is set up and tidied for you.
A scheduled event is a live session in a room (a talk, a Q and A, an open mic) at a time you choose. You schedule it once and the network does the rest, in the Web Chat and in every IRC program, because everything is sent as plain notices.
Schedule one
/events schedule #town-hall 19:30 90 MODERATED Quarterly town hall /events schedule #music 30 60 Open mic night /events schedule #talks 2026-10-20 18:00 45 Autumn talk
The words after the room are: when, how many minutes it lasts, optionally MODERATED, then the title. *When* is a number of minutes from now (30), the next time of day (19:30) or a date and time (2026-10-20 19:30), always in UTC. The room's founder or an SOP, or an IRC operator, can schedule events. An event starts at least a minute from now and at most 90 days away, lasts 1 to 720 minutes, and two events cannot overlap in one room.
What everybody sees
| When | Who is told |
|---|---|
| The moment you schedule it | Everybody online gets a notice: title, room, start time (UTC) and how to join. The room gets it too. |
| 60 and 10 minutes before | Everybody online and the room: [Event] ... starts in 10 minutes (#room). Join with /join #room. |
| 1 minute before | The room. |
| At the start | Everybody online and the room. The room topic changes to LIVE NOW: <title> (until ...). With MODERATED the room is set moderated (+m), so only people with voice or ops can speak. |
| 5 minutes before the end | The room (for events longer than ten minutes). |
| At the end | The room is thanked, the old topic comes back and +m is taken off again (only if the event set it). |
See and cancel events
/events /events cancel 3
/events shows what is coming up and what is live right now, with how long is left and the room to /join. Anybody can run it. The founder, an SOP or an operator can cancel with /events cancel <number>; the room is told and the topic and moderation are put back.
Tips. A reminder that would already be late when you schedule the event is skipped, so scheduling something 5 minutes away does not flood anybody. Combine with moderated events for audience questions, and with Auditorium Rows for big crowds.
