Create a room
Make a new room in seconds, become its operator and decide what happens next.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
Anyone can make a room. There is no form to fill in.
Steps
- Choose a name. It starts with
#, for example#book-club. Check Room names for what is allowed. - Join it. In the Web Chat, type the name in the search box on the room list page and choose to start it, or type
/join #book-clubin any room. With an IRC client, type/join #book-club. - If nobody was there, the room is created and you are its operator, shown with
@next to your name. - Set a topic so visitors know what the room is for:
/topic #book-club Fiction on Fridays. - Send people the address:
https://www.conferencerooms.org/chat/book-club/. See Share the URL.
A new room starts with the modes +nt: only people inside can write to it, and only operators can change the topic. See Room modes.
It disappears when it empties
A room that is not registered lasts only while someone is in it. When the last person leaves, the room, its topic and its settings are gone. To keep a room, register it.
Check that the name is free
If the room already has people, you join as an ordinary visitor instead of an operator. Choose another name, or ask the operators there.
Tip. Create the room, set the topic, then register it before you share the address widely. That way nobody else can take it over later.
