Moderating: overview
How rooms are run, and the tools you have.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
A room is run by its operators. Everything you need is in four tools:
- Status levels. Operators (
@) can do almost everything; voiced people (+) can speak when the room is moderated. See Ops and voice. - Removing people. Kick sends someone out; ban keeps them out. See Kick and ban.
- Access lists. In a registered room, ChanServ remembers who is trusted and gives them status automatically. See Access lists.
- Room settings. Modes and ChanServ settings decide who may join and speak. See Room modes and Room settings.
Ops (@) are the heart of it
Every moderation tool starts with the op status, +o. The full guide is in this section: What is an op?, What an op can do, Op commands cheat sheet and Op scenarios.
Good practice
- Register the room so your role does not disappear when the room empties.
- Add a few trusted people as operators through the access lists, not just by
/mode +o. - Write rules in the topic.
- Warn first, then kick, then ban.
- Check
/cs WHY #room nickif someone has status you did not expect.
