Giving and taking ops
Pass on @, safely.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
Give @
irc
/op sam /mode #room +o sam /cs OP #room sam
All three do the same. The last asks services to do it, which is handy if you have lost your own @ or if a script has trouble opping people. The other ops in the room see a note that services were used.
Take @ away
irc
/deop sam /mode #room -o sam /cs DEOP #room sam
Several people at once
irc
/mode #room +ooo sam alex jo
You can change up to 6 modes in one command.
Make it permanent
@ is lost when someone leaves. To make it automatic, put them on a list in a registered room:
irc
/cs AOP #room ADD sam
Now Sam gets @ whenever they join and are identified. See Access lists.
Before you give @ to someone
- Do you trust them?
- Are they a registered, identified nickname? A guest nickname can be taken by anyone.
- Do they need *
@*, or would *voice* do? - Will they still be around next week?
Careful. Giving
@ to a stranger can end badly. They can kick you out, change the topic and take the room's ops away. Registered rooms with OPGUARD on protect you from this.Take everyone's @ away
irc
/cs MDEOP #room
It deops everyone, including you, unless somebody in the room outranks you. Use it when something has gone wrong, then give @ back to people one at a time. See Take back control.
