Using the Web Chat on a phone or tablet.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
The Web Chat is built to feel like an app on a small screen: a slim top bar, a message box like the one in your messages app, and windows that fit without scrolling.
The top bar
- Menu button (three lines, left): opens your list of rooms.
- Room name, with the number of people, the modes and the topic on the line below.
- People button: opens the member list.
- More button (three dots, right): your menu. It holds your nickname (tap it to change it, log in or register), Room info, Room settings and Edit the topic (only if you are an operator there), Settings and Help.
Swipes
- Swipe in from the left edge to open the room list, and from the right edge to open the member list.
- Swipe a list back the way it came to close it, or tap outside it.
The message box
- It is a rounded box that grows as you type, with automatic capitals at the start of a sentence, autocorrect and your keyboard's own word and emoji suggestions.
- As you type a word that has an emoji (for example "pizza"), a few emoji appear above the box. Tap one to swap it for your word. See Sending messages.
- The smiley button next to the box opens an emoji panel in place of the keyboard. Tap as many emoji as you like (the box keeps its place above the panel), use the delete key to take the last one back and ABC to return to the keyboard. Tapping the messages puts the panel away.
- The round up arrow sends; the keyboard stays open so you can keep typing. On phones that support it you feel a small tick when a message is sent.
- Tapping a room, Highlights or Status does not open the keyboard. Tap the message box to type.
Windows and menus
- Settings, nickname, room info and the other windows are made to fit the screen without scrolling. On a very small phone a long window scrolls inside, and its Save and Close buttons stay in view at the bottom.
- With the keyboard up, the topic line steps aside to leave room for the messages.
- The bars at the top and bottom of your phone take the color of your theme, light or dark, so the chat fills the whole screen. See Settings and themes.
- Press and hold a room address to copy it.
Tip. Add the page to your home screen from your browser's menu to open it like an app.
