Blocking and privacy

Keep unwanted messages away, whisper, and keep a log.

Silence somebody

irc
/silence Annoyer
/silence -Annoyer
/silence

/silence nick stops that person's messages, notices and CTCP from reaching you. A nickname becomes nick!*@*; you can also use a mask such as *!*@badhost.example. /silence -nick removes it and /silence alone lists your list. The list belongs to this connection and is gone when you disconnect.

User modes that protect you

ModeWhat it does
+mNobody can send you private messages. Exceptions: +R registered users, +J web chat users, +C people in a room with you, +M registered people in a room with you, +B people on your ACCEPT list.
+pBlocks CTCP requests such as VERSION. Actions (/me) still arrive.
+eBlocks all DCC offers.
+dAllows dangerous DCC. Without it, offers of program files (.exe, .bat, .scr and the like) never reach you.
+INobody can invite you to a room (operators still can).
+nYou see newsflashes the operators send.

Set a mode with /umode +m, remove it with /umode -m, and see yours with /umode.

Whisper in a room

irc
/whisper #room Anna,Ben Can you two stay a minute?

A whisper shows in the room window, but only the people you name and the room's operators see it. Rooms can forbid whispers with mode +q.

Keep a log of private messages

/plog on starts keeping your last 60 private messages in the server's memory. /plog read shows them, /plog off stops and shows them, /plog clear empties the log. The log is not emailed and is lost when you disconnect.

Other small commands

CommandWhat it does
/unidentifyMake the server forget that you identified to your nickname.
/avatar nameSet your avatar name (/avatar alone clears it).
/services info nickSame as /msg NickServ info nick.
