Country flags

A flag emoji is a country's flag as one character, for example 🇵🇹 for Portugal. You can paste any of them into a message, a topic, an away message or your /ns set field lines (and the Web Chat shows them like any other emoji). This page lists every country flag, in alphabetical order by country name, with its two-letter code.

How to use them

• Copy and paste the flag from the Flag column. In the Web Chat you can also open the emoji button next to the message box and search for the country name or the word "flag".
• Type them yourself: a flag is two special letters. On a phone keyboard search "flag" and the country; on Windows press the Windows key and the full stop Win + ., then the flags tab. On macOS press Ctrl + Cmd + Space.
• Flags are not avatars. The avatar list is a fixed set of 184 emoji and has no flags. Put a flag in your message, your topic or a field such as Location instead.

If you only see two letters

Windows shows flags as two letters (a "box" with PT instead of the Portuguese flag) in most browsers and programs, because Microsoft's emoji font has no country flags. That is normal and not a problem of the chat: the other person with an Android phone, an iPhone, a Mac or Linux sees the flag, and you can still read the two letters as the country code. To see flags on Windows you can install a font that has them, for example "Twemoji Mozilla" or "Noto Color Emoji". Old Android versions and some IRC programs can also show letters instead.

Some of these (the three UK nations, the pirate and transgender flags) are several emoji joined together; older systems may show them as a black flag followed by letters.
