Do and don't
Simple etiquette that makes you welcome everywhere.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
Do
- Say hello and read the topic.
- Ask your question straight away. "Does anyone know how to...?" gets better answers than "Can I ask something?"
- Be patient. People may be away from the keyboard.
- Write one thought per line instead of one long block.
- Say thanks. It keeps rooms friendly.
- Use the room for its purpose. Many rooms have a topic and rules.
- Report problems to a room operator (the names with
@).
Do not
- Do not shout in capital letters.
- Do not repeat the same message to get attention (it counts as flooding).
- Do not advertise in rooms that did not ask for it.
- Do not share private information, yours or anybody else's.
- Do not give out your password, ever. No one from the network will ask for it.
- Do not argue with operators in public. If you disagree, talk to them in private.
The reminder when you arrive
The first time you open a room you see a short card: be considerate, no spamming, flooding or harassment, rooms are run by their owners. Continue takes you in, Exit leaves, and Don't show again hides it on that browser.
If things get heated
Step away for a minute. If someone bothers you, tell a room operator. See Community guidelines.
