What is ConferenceRooms.org?
The network, the Web Chat, rooms and services in plain words.
Operators only. This section is for IRC operators.
ConferenceRooms.org is a chat network built on IRC, the standard protocol for group chat that has been in use for decades. Because it is a standard, you are not tied to one program: you can chat from the Web Chat in a browser, or connect with an IRC client on a computer or phone.
The parts
- Rooms are where conversations happen. A room has a name that starts with
#, such as#welcome, and anyone who knows the name can join (unless the room is locked). - Nicknames identify people. You pick one when you join. You can register it so nobody else can use it.
- The Web Chat at www.conferencerooms.org/chat/ is the browser version. It keeps up to ten rooms open as tabs, shows who is in each room, and works on phones.
- Services are helpers that look after the network: NickServ for nicknames, ChanServ for rooms, MemoServ for messages to people who are offline, and HelpServ for help.
What you can do
- Chat in public rooms and in private one-to-one conversations.
- Create a room in seconds, with no registration, and share its web address.
- Register your nickname and your rooms so they stay yours.
- Choose who may enter, speak and moderate in a room.
- Leave messages (memos) for people who are not online.
- Keep a buddy list to see when friends are around.
What it is not
There is no account to create just to chat. Rooms that nobody has registered disappear when the last person leaves. Register what you want to keep.
